Adopting a religion means willingly suspending your critical thinking. While the beliefs can be peaceful, groups of people with suspended critical thinking often mutate into mobs gathered around a leader who figured out how to exploit them. For a healthy society, it's best to regard religious groups with light ridicule and don't codify anything regarding religion into laws. Confronting religious groups usually makes them more popular, as religious people will more likely double down on their beliefs than rationally submit to law enforcement. Thus, it's important to ridicule religious people early, when they still maintain some link to the outside world.
